Kenny Britt gives the St. Louis Rams yet another mediocre wide receiver

On Monday, as the St. Louis Cardinals were winning their season opener by the score of 1-0 over the Cincinnati Reds, the city's local NFL franchise decided to make some news as well, signing free agent wide receiver Kenny Britt to a one-year contract.

The move does not really come as a big surprise, at least to this pessimistic fan.

For one, Britt fits in great with the rest of this wide receiving corp. He is horribly average and mediocre and should give the healing Sam Bradford yet another very inconsistent target to throw the ball to.

Secondly, we have seen Jeff Fisher bring in one of "his guys" before when he brought in Cortland Finnegan prior to his first season in St. Louis. Britt played under Fisher, during Britt's productive, pre-injury and too many arrests stage, when both were in Tennessee.

Unfortunately now, Britt has been unable to recover from his torn ACL injury fully and never has reached his full potential.

Britt has never caught more than 42 balls in a single season and his presence really does not solve any of the Rams issues at wide receivers.

Defenders of Fisher, general manager Les Snead and the Rams franchise will point out that this is a low risk, high reward type of move.

But to me, it feels like an attempt to pick off some more low-hanging fruit and another shaky bandaid to fix a major problem that has not been addressed since the likes of Issac Bruce and Tory Holt stopped wearing the navy and gold on the cavernous turf at the Edward Jones Dome.

Hopefully this move does signal the Rams intentions to not select Sammy Watkins in this year's NFL Draft, although with the roster still seaping with gaping holes in so many areas, it would not be surprising if the Rams addressed other needs anyway (such as offensive tackle, offensive guard, corner back, safety and even outside linebacker).

If anyone should feel vulnerable about the presence of Britt at Rams Park, it should be Brian Quick. Quick will be entering his third year and has grossly underperformed. Britt has size, just like Quick, and could push Quick out of town and complete one of the few blunders the Fisher/Snead regime have had in the NFL Draft since taking over two springs ago.

Many in St. Louis are willing to be patient with this team and franchise at it reshapes itself under Fisher and strives to have its first over .500 season in a decade.

I just do not see how the addition of Britt helps get the Rams closer to the rest of the NFC West. As of now, the Rams still look the favorites to finish in the cellar of the division, yet again.  Although the seven win seasons posted during the past two years does not feel too bad, last place is still last place.
