St. Louis Cardinals send Carlos Martinez to Memphis, recall Victor Marte

The St. Louis Cardinals are in desperate need of gaining some stability in a starting rotation that can not seem to stay healthy. John Gast was the latest victim over the weekend and was placed on the disabled list with a sore shoulder, leaving the Cardinals searching for another option.

For now, the Cardinals are settling on sending Carlos Martinez down to Triple-A Memphis and have recalled reliever Victor Marte. The move has been made likely in attempt to get Martinez some starts and have him stretched out and possibly take a role in the Cardinals rotation soon.






In the short-term, it looks as though Joe Kelly might get the nod to start in the interim, but the 24-year old has not been stretched out himself.

Martinez projects as a top-of-the-rotation starter and has shown during his brief stint with the Cardinals in the bullpen that he has the stuff to pitch at this level despite being just 21 years of age.

Martinez last pitched on Saturday, tossing a scoreless inning in the Cardinals 5-3 loss to the Dodgers on Saturday.

Marte, who spent some time with the Cardinals in 2012, has been mostly solid with Memphis with this year. Marte has appeared in 20 games for the Redbirds and has a 2.78 ERA and has posted 10 saves as the affiliates closer.

The shuffling continues on the Cardinals pitching staff as the team looks for players who can contribute and stay healthy.
