St. Louis Cardinals: Weekly farm system report - April 29 edition

Every Monday, John Nagel of CardinalsFarm.com will provide StlSportsMinute.com with a St. Louis Cardinals Weekly Farm report. This will name a player and pitcher of the week in the Cardinals' farm system and will also run through each team and talk about players who have had good weeks, bad weeks, and also player movement.

Week 3 covers games from April 22nd to April 28th

Player of the Week: Mike O'Neill - 11-20, 9 R, 10 BB, 2 SB

Pitcher of the Week: Tim Cooney - 1-0, 7 IP, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K

Memphis Redbirds (AAA)

The Redbirds finished the week with a 3-3 record and swept a double header on Sunday. The one thing that stands out is the pitching staff. John Gast has not allowed an earned run all season, 29 2/3 scoreless innings. Michael Wacha has a sub 2.00 ERA and sub .170 batting average against. Seth Maness, Tyler Lyons, and Nick Additon have all been solid. The Redbirds bullpen is finally stabilizing as well. The offense has slowed this week only scoring 12 runs in the six games. Jermaine Curtis was promoted to the big club this week which should allow Greg Garcia, Kolten Wong, and Ryan Jackson to play almost every day.

Transactions

  • 4/22 - J. R. Towles placed on the 7-day disabled list
  • 4/22 - Travis Tartamella transferred to Memphis from Springfield
  • 4/26 - St. Louis Cardinals purchase the contract of Jermaine Curtis
Springfield Cardinals (AA)

The Springfield Cardinals finished the week with a 3-4 record which included double headers on Wednesday and Sunday. Thomas Pham and Miek O'Neill were the offensive leaders for Springfield this week. On Sunday, Mike O'Neill recorded 8 plate appearances and was on base 8 times with 6 hits and 2 walks. O'Neill, who started slow, is now up to a .338 average and an amazing on base percentage of .479. Carlos Martinez made his second start and its back on track. Some believe Martinez could find himself in St. Louis by the end of the season.

Transactions
  • 4/22 - Chris Corrigan transferred to Palm Beach
  • 4/22 - Juan Castillo transferred from Palm Beach to Springfield
  • 4/22 - Travis Tartamella transferred from Springfield to Memphis
Palm Beach Cardinals (A+)

The "Beach Birds" finished the week with a 3-3 record. Stephen Piscotty has been the MVP of the PB Cards so far this season with injured James Ramsey not too far behind. In his last 10 games, Piscotty is hitting .395 with 2 HR, 6 RBI, 2 2B, and 7 R. I believe Piscotty is close, if not already, ready for a bump up to Double-A. It could come soon. Also Ramsey could be bumped up soon assuming he returns to form when activated from the DL. The Cards placed starting catcher Cody Stanley on the DL which will give Adam Ehrlich and Jesus Montero a good look at a higher level

The Chiefs finished the week with a 3-2 record. Patrick Wisdom was the offensive leader last week for the Chiefs. Wisdom hit 3 home runs in the week and finished second in the Player of the Week running behind Mike O'Neill. Alex Mejia continues his hot hitting with a .338 batting average on the season. The Chiefs got a spark at the top of the lineup when C.J. McElroy was assigned to Peoria from Extended Spring Training. On Friday, Kurt Heyer was struck with a line drive in the second inning.
