St. Louis Cardinals: Bats waste Adam Wainwright's solid effort in 2-1 loss to Reds

After getting shut out in a 9-0 loss to Pittsburgh on Sunday afternoon at Busch Stadium, many expected the St. Louis Cardinals bats to wake up from a deep slumber in time for Monday's tilt with the Cincinnati Reds in town. Unfortunately, the Cardinals' bats were held silent once again and St. Louis wasted a solid performance from ace Adam Wainwright in a 2-1 loss to the Reds.

Wainwright, who saw his record drop to 4-2 on the season after the loss, pitched well enough to win on most nights.

The game started badly for Wainwright in the first as Reds' leadoff man Shin Soo Choo started the game with a leadoff double and just two hitters later, first baseman Joey Votto drove Choo home with a sharply hit single to center to give the Reds the lead before most fans had taken their seats.

Wainwright settled down from there and pitched seven innings, allowing just two earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out six. Wainwright pitched well and deserved a better fate.

Unfortunately, the rollar coaster offense was held at bay for the second consecutive day, this time by Reds' starter Mat Latos.

The Cardinals were able to muster home a run in the eighth inning thanks to a RBI double off the bat of Yadier Molina which scored Allen Craigh, but as a whole the Cardinals lineup was quiet.

The Cardinals were able to create opportunities and by collecting seven hits and by drawing four walks. But manager Mike Matheny's team was unable to come up with the big-hit with runners on base to push across any runs. The Cardinals were just 2-11 with runners in scoring position and left an alarming 10 runners on base.

Several Cardinals are struggling all at the same time. David Freese was particularly awful on Monday night, going 0 for 4 and not sees his batting average at a putrid .163.

On a positive note, the Cardinals bullpen did not allow a run after getting torched by the Pirates over the weekend. Trevor Rosenthal and Randy Choate combined to toss two scoreless innings.
