In this shortened, 48 game NHL season, the St. Louis Blues entered Thursday night's game with the Columbus Blue Jackets surprisingly rested. The Blues had not played since Sunday and it showed early on as the Blues jumped out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back, beating Columbus 4-1 to pick up a nice road win.
The Blues first goal came from an unlikely source in defenseman Barret Jackman, who took a Ryan Reaves pass on the point and fired it towards to net, beating Blue Jackets goalie Steve Mason to give the Blues a 1-0 lead with just 2:19 gone in the first period.
The Blues kept the scoring going from there. Blues center Patrik Berglund blasted home a power play goal at the 10:23 mark and then rookie sensation Vladimir Tarasenko scored his fifth goal of the season on a nifty move followed by tricky wrist shot that beat Mason to give the Blues a 3-0 lead.
The Blues outshot Columbus 12-6 in the first period, but the tables turned a bit in the second as the Blue Jackes buzzed around the St. Louis zone during much of the second period. Columbus was able to beat Blues goalie Brian Elliott in the second period on a Derick Brassard power play goal.
Not only did the second period feature a Columbus surge, but also was highlighted by plenty of physical play as their were four fights in the period. Jackman, Reaves, Chris Stewart, and Scott Nichol all dropped the gloves for the Blues in the win.
There was not action in the third period as the two teams managed only 11 total shots. The Blues were able to hold off Columbus before finally finishing them off on a David Backes empty net goal.
Backes also finished the night with an assist and T.J. Oshie had a pair of helpers in the win.
Elliot was solid between the pipes for the Blues, stopping 24 of the 25 shots he faced to help the Blues improve to 6-1-0 on the season.
