Mizzou's offense, one week after watching quarterback James Franklin toss four interceptions, was once again sputtering. The Tigers mustered just 64 yards of total offense in the first half as they went to the locker room trailing Tennessee 21-7.
But then the Tigers opened the second half with a 77 yard touchdown run by running back Kendial Lawrence on the first play from scrimmage and the comeback was on from there as Mizzou defeated Tennessee 51-48 on four overtimes.
The comeback culminated with a 25 yard touchdown pass from Franklin to freshman Dorial Green-Beckham to tie the game at 28-28 with 47 second remaining and force overtime.
From there, Franklin orchestrated three successful overtime touchdown drives, including throws to Marcus Lucas, Jimmy Hunt, and another to Green-Beckham in the third overtime.
The Tigers defense came up huge in the fourth overtime, stopping the Volunteers and allowing the Mizzou offense to win the game with a Andrew Baggett 35 yard field goal to secure Mizzou's first ever road SEC win.
The defense was also huge in the second half while helping the offense to contribute to the comeback. The Tigers allowed just seven second half points to the explosive Tennessee offense and bottled up Volunteers quarterback Tyler Bray.
Franklin followed up last week's four interception debacle with a four touchdown performance while Lawrence ended the day with 153 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 21 carries in the win.
The win moves Mizzou's record to 5-5 overall and 2-5 in the SEC. Mizzou needs just one more win to be bowl eligible for the eighth consecutive season under Pinkel.
Next up for Mizzou is Syracuse, who just demolished ninth ranked Louisville on Saturday.
