Lefty reliever Brian Fuentes decides to retire

Fans worrying that maybe the St. Louis Cardinals and general manager John Mozeliak may once again look at Brian Fuentes as a left-handed option out of the bullpen should be relieved.  Fuentes does not want to play baseball anymore.

Fuentes, once a closer for the Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, has decided to retire.

"Ultimately, I was just having trouble with the time away from my family," Fuentes told the Merced Sun-Star.

Fuentes, who is 37 years old, appeared in just six games for the Cardinals in 2012 after Mozeliak signed him to a contract after he was released by the Oakland Athletics.

Fuentes pitched 12 seasons at the MLB level with several clubs.  His breakout season came in 2005 with the Rockies when he saved 31 games while posting a 2.91 ERA.

In 2009, while pitching for the Angels, Fuentes led the American League with a career high 48 saves.
