Now that the San Francisco Giants have clinched their second World Series Championship in three seasons, the baseball off-season can officially begin and moves are already being made.
On Monday news broke that the Oakland Athletics would not exercise their option to bring back shortstop Stephen Drew for the 2013 and instead, will pay Drew a $1.35 million buyout and making the brother of former Cardinals outfield J.D. Drew a free agent.
Many believe the Cardinals have an issue at shortstop. Both Rafael Furcal and rookie Pete Kozma are question marks, Furcal because of his health and Kozma because of his shaky defense during the playoffs.
So should the Cardinals target Stephen Drew in free agency?
Drew, who was traded to Oakland during the season by the Arizona Diamondbacks, hit just .223 in 2012 with seven home runs and 28 RBI's. But Drew was good down the stretch for Oakland, with his most of his production coming in September. Drew hit .263 with five dingers and 14 RBI's and his play down the stretch was a big reason why the Athletics were able to make the playoffs.
So should the Cardinals go after Drew, who also has his own set of injury issues? Or should they stand pat or look elsewhere via trade to solve their potential problems at shortstop?
