St. Louis native Tom Layne may not be wearing a St. Louis Cardinals jersey, but he is doing everything he can to help the Cardinals out this month while wearing a San Diego Padres uniform.
On Wednesday, Layne picked up his first Major League save in a 4-2 Padres victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates, who the Cardinals now lead by a half game in the National League Central Division.
Layne pitched a flawless ninth inning, throwing just eleven pitches to pick up the save and struck out one hitter.
The lefty, who is a 2003 graduate of Fort Zumwalt South in St. Peters, Missouri, has now appeared in five games for the Padres and has yet to give up a run at the Major League level.
In fact, Layne not only has been impressive thus far, he has been downright dominant, allowing just one hit and a walk in his five appearances while striking out eight hitters in 4.1 innings.
Layne's dominance began with his Major League debut when he struck out the side on August 14th and the 27 year old has not let off the gas since.
It is always good to see a St. Louis kid do big things at the Major League level, especially when it indirectly helps out the home team Cardinals.
Congrats to Tom Layne for picking up his first save and hopefully he can continue his outstanding start to his MLB career.
