Lance Berkman to retire after season?

After being an integral part of the St. Louis Cardinals miracle World Series run in 2011, Lance Berkman's 2012 season has been beyond frustrating.

One season after looking revived and young again, Berkman has been injury riddled and snake-bit this season.  The switch-hitting first baseman has appeared in just 28 games this season.  Berkman, who is currently on a rehab assignment with Triple AAA Memphis, is attempting his third comeback from the disabled list this season.

But according to what Berkman told Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on Saturday, it may be the last time the slugger tries to comeback.  Berkman told Strauss that he may be headed towards retirement after this season.
"I don't want to rule anything out. But if you asked me right now I'm leaning toward not playing next year.  I don't want to say for certain because I don't want to do like Brett Favre and say, 'I retired; I'm not retired; I'm retired; I'm not retired.' I don't want to make that call right now, but if you put a gun to my head and demand an answer today I would tell you I'm probably not going to play next year."
If this is indeed Berkman's last hurrah, St. Louis fans should treasure his presence once he returns to St. Louis, which presumably barring any setbacks will be September 1st, the day MLB rosters expand to 40 players.

Berkman has been one of the best switch hitters in MLB history.  He has a career .296 batting average with 360 career home runs and exactly 1200 RBI's.

While Berkman did most of his damage in a Houston Astros uniform, against the Cardinals for that matter, St. Louis fans should celebrate Berkman's career if this is indeed the end.

Berkman is a class act.  Period.  There is no better way to explain it.

Berkman should always have a special place in Cardinals hearts because his contribution to the 2011 World Championship team wasn't anything short of special.

Here is to a healthy end of the career for Lance Berkman.
