St. Louis Cardinals fans held their breath on Friday night after David Freese was hit on the wrist by a fastball from the hand of Cincinnati Reds reliever Alfredo Simon.

Freese's wrist was visibly bruised on the telecast as he stood on first base.  Cardinals fans had seen this before when Freese spent time on the disabled list in 2011 with a similar injury.

Things looked to be bad when Freese was out of Saturday's lineup, but after some more tests, it looks as though there was no damage to Freese left wrist.  Manager Mike Matheny will have Freese available off the bench to pinch hit on Sunday and Freese could return to the starting lineup as early as Monday night.
"They got all the tests done and they came back negative, which was good news.  But it's still keeping him from letting it go. It'll probably be another day. I think we'll also be able to have him off the bench, if necessary. We still want him to do some more swinging and a little more therapy to make sure. I thought he might be able to go."
Freese has appeared in 114 games this season for the Cardinals, hitting .299 with 17 home runs and 71 RBI's on the season.  It is the first season that Freese has been able to remain healthy at the Major League level.

The positive news on Freese's hand and wrist is an encouraging sign for Cardinals fans.  The club could not afford to lose him for an extended period of time as the team enters the stretch run of the season.
