After Sunday's devastating nineteen inning loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates, the St. Louis Cardinals needed two things to happen on Tuesday night against the Houston Astros to get things back on track.

First, the Cardinals needed the offense to get going and jump on the young Astros.  Secondly, the Cardinals needed ace Adam Wainwright to be a stopper and pitch a strong game to help a depleted bullpen.

The Cardinals got both as the offense scored four first inning runs and Wainwright went the distance in the Cardinals 7-0 shutout of the cellar dwelling Astros.

Wainwright was spectacular on Tuesday night, dominating Astros hitters.

Wainwright struck out 12 hitters while walking just one.  Wainwright only allowed five hits on 105 pitches to go the distance and pick up the shutout and preserve the Cardinals weary bullpen.

Meanwhile the offense got things cooking early in the bottom of the first.  Jon Jay led off the bottom of the first with a double and later scored on a Lucas Harrell balk, which started the scoring brigade as Yadier Molina singled home a run while Skip Schumaker drove in two runs in the opening frame.

Molina picked up another RBI in the third inning with a single while shortstop Rafael Furcal and Jay drove in the Cardinals other two runs.

Molina and Jay both finished the night with two hits while outfielder Carlos Beltran missed the game with a sore left hand.
