Following Adam Wainwright's 12 strikeout, complete game shutout performance on Tuesday night, it was going to be difficult for St. Louis Cardinals starter Kyle Lohse to do any better.

While Lohse failed to go the distance and did allow the Houston Astros to score a pair of runs on solo home runs, Lohse was also quite good as the Cardinals beat the Astros 4-2 on Wednesday night at Busch Stadium.

Lohse allowed a first inning home run to former Cardinals prospect Brett Wallace and another solo shot in the third inning to Astros catcher Chris Snyder, but from that point on it was smooth sailing for Lohse.

Lohse actually left the game after seven innings and had retired the last fourteen batters he had faced to push his record to an impressive 13-2 on the season.

While Lohse let the Astros get out in front early, the Cardinals offense did enough to manage some runs off of Bud Norris.

Daniel Descalso doubled home a run in the second inning.  Jon Jay singled home Rafael Furcal in the fifth inning before scoring himself on a wild pitch.  The Cardinals scoring ended with a Yadier Molina single in the eighth inning to give the Cardinals an insurance run.

Mitchell Boggs pitched a scoreless eighth inning to pick up his 24th hold of the season while closer Jason Motte finished off the ninth on just eight pitches to pick up his 29th save of the season.

Both Jay and Matt Holliday finished the night with a pair of hits while Carlos Beltran returned to the lineup to go one for three on the night.
