Why does Daniel Descalso get a free pass?

St. Louis Cardinals fans love to pile on Tyler Greene for his inept production in 2012.  Cardinals fans have every right to get all over Greene, who is hitting just .220 on the season.  Greene has been so bad that manager Mike Matheny has done his best to limit his appearances in the field and delegated him to pinch hitting duty, which is yet another task Greene has managed to blunder.

While Cardinals fans continue to direct their anger in Greene's direction, he is not the only Cardinals second baseman who has struggled mightily in 2012.

Second baseman Daniel Descalso has been completely inept at the plate in 2012, yet never gets the negative attention and anger that gets tossed Tyler Greene's direction.

Descalso is hitting just .225 on the season with just three home runs and eleven RBI's in 78 games played.

Descalso has been the definition of a light-hitting second baseman in 2012.  Descalso has just five doubles, giving him only eight extra base hits in 191 at bats.  Descalso's OPS of .643 is actually lower than that of Greene's.  Descalso has struck out 47 times and is hitting just .095 with runners in scoring position.

This is not an attempt to defend Tyler Greene in anyway.  The former first round pick has been utterly horrendous and is lucky to still be on the roster.

This is simply pointing out that when it comes to the performance of Descalso when compared to Greene, there seems to be a double standard among Cardinals fans.

Greene may be an easy goat for Cardinals fans to go after, but Descalso has been almost as bad as Greene in 2012.  His terrible performance should not be overlooked and his lack of production has been a big reason the Cardinals can not find an everyday solution at second base.

Cardinals fans should stop giving Daniel Descalso a free pass and hold him accountable too, just as they do Tyler Greene every single night.

  1. it comes down to defense. Descalso is much better in the field.
