The St. Louis Cardinals, in the heat of a battle for second place in the National League Central Division, melted under the sweltering St. Louis sun and dropped their second consecutive game to the Pirates on Saturday afternoon by the score of 7-3.

The Cardinals fell yet another game back of the Pirates and now are three games behind the division leading Cincinnati Reds.

Lance Lynn got the start for the Cardinals and things turned bad for Lynn in a hurry as he allowed a grand slam in the top of the first inning to Pirates third baseman Pedro Alvarez.  The Cardinals were never able to recover as they were shut down for the most part by Pirates starter Jeff Karstens in the loss.

Lynn managed to battle through five innings, allowing a total of six earned runs on seven hits and four walks while picking up his fourth loss of the season.  Lynn leads the Cardinals with ten wins on the season but has not picked up a win in any of his past three starts.

The Cardinals picked up their three runs with the help of Carlos Beltran and Matt Holliday.  Holliday singled in Jon Jay in the third inning while Beltran doubled in Jay in the eighth inning.  Jay also picked up an RBI of his own with a fielders choice in the third inning.

Possibly the lone bright spot for the Cardinals was the performance by relief pitcher Barret Browning, who was called up from Triple AAA Memphis before the game on Saturday.  Browning pitched two perfect innings in his Major League debut.

The Cardinals have now dropped three games in a row after winning five games in a row last week and are just two games over .500 on the season.
