The St. Louis Cardinals have a good problem in 2012.  The roster is deep and talented with a number of players that can contribute in all types of different ways.

According to the St. Louis Cardinals official website, first baseman Lance Berkman, who is on the disabled list from a strained calf, is listed as day-to-day and is eligible to come off of the disabled list when he feels right.

So if Berkman returns early next week like many think, who should the Cardinals ship to Memphis to make room?

Often times these things take care of themselves with other injuries, but if Berkman returns with everyone else healthy, who should be shipped to Memphis?  Here are the candidates.

Outfielder Shane Robinson has impressed thus far after making the club out of spring training.  Robinson has only appeared in 18 games and has just 37 at bats, but he is second on the club with his .351 batting average.  Robinson can also play centerfield when needed and gives manager Mike Matheny some speed and a right-handed bat off the bench.

Matt Carpenter has prospered the most in Berkman's absence.  Carpenter is hitting .268 with 14 RBI's while receiving the bulk of the playing since Berkman's injury.  Carpenter can also play all over the field.  He is adequate at first base, third base, and both corner outfield spots.  Carpenter does have options left and it is unclear how much playing time will be available in St. Louis once Berkman returns.

Second baseman Daniel Descalso is another player with options remaining and has struggled at the plate in 2012.  Descalso is hitting just .204 this season.  The left-handed hitting infielder is likely the Cardinals best defensive replacement off the bench at all infield positions though, something that has is valuable for Matheny to use late in games.

Infielder Tyler Greene is out of options but he also might be out of time with Cardinals fans.  To the ire of Cardinals fans, Greene has struggled out of the gate after failing to win the second base job in spring training.  Greene offers speed with his two stolen bases and a power threat, but is hitting just .205 and the former shortstops defense has been under scrutiny all season.

So who should go down once Berkman returns?  Vote now!
