There have been many excuses made for the incredibly slow start by Albert Pujols to the 2012 season.
In his first season after signing a 10 year, $240 million contract with the Los Angeles Angels, Pujols is homer-less through his first 23 games and is hitting just .217 with four RBI's on the young season.
It is easily the slowest start to any season in Pujols eleven year career and people have blamed his new setting, the unfamiliarity with American League pitching, and the pressure Of living up to the huge contract as reasons for Pujols struggles.
But maybe Pujols is struggling because of a reason at home.
According to his wife Deidre, in an interview with KSDK Channel 5 in St. Louis, the family is expecting their fifth child later this fall.
Pujols has always been a family man, known not only for his fantastic on field career, but also his charitable work wih his foundation that focuses on young children with Down syndrome. Pujols has a child with the disease and it is something very close to the family's heart.
So with Pujols being such a family man, maybe a reason for his struggles is a result of the pending addition at home. With his family expecting a new baby in St. Louis and Pujols in Southern California, you could understand how difficult that may be for a family man like Pujols.
Either way, congrats to the Pujols family. While many in St. Louis may still feel betrayed by his departure, I think everyone can agree that the Pujols family deserves nothing but the best with their pending child on the way.
