Poll: With Carpenter injured, should Cardinals go after Roy Oswalt?

Friday was a day of ups and downs for St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny.

Matheny watched one of his co-aces, Adam Wainwright, effectively return to game action for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery while his other co-ace, Chris Carpenter, left camp to see a specialist regarding an ailing stiff neck.

Wainwright's progress is promising to say the least, but Carpenter's injury is very alarming and could leave a gaping hole in the Cardinals starting rotation.

So after an off-season of rumored flirting with veteran free agent pitcher Roy Oswalt has ended, is it now time for general manager John Mozeliak to suck it up, open up the check book, and give Oswalt the money he wants to come in and be a very viable insurance policy for the Cardinals?

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com has reported that Oswalt could pull off a Roger Clemens type of move and join a team mid-season and is open to joining any club, as opposed to previous reports during the winter that suggested he was primarily pitching for St. Louis or Texas.

But can the Cardinals afford to wait until the mid-season to bring in Oswalt if Carpenter is shelved for an extended period of time?

Should they bring in the 34 year old pitcher who has compiled 159 victories over 11 major league seasons now rather than risk him signing with another club?
