St. Louis Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter has left spring training in Jupiter, Florida to seek a second opinion on an ailing neck injury that had limited his throwing program this spring, according to Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Carpenter's departure from camp creates a heightened level of uncertainty at the front of the Cardinals rotation.Carpenter was penciled in to be the Cardinals opening day starter but it now looks as though that the nod will be given to Adam Wainwright, who is making his first Grapefruit League start this afternoon. It will be Wainwright's first game action since undergoing Tommy John surgery last spring.
Carpenter was a horse for the Cardinals during their magical post-season run, logging a career high 273 innings.
Unfortunately for Cardinals fans, those worried about the ill-effects of the workload last season have proven to be correct. Carpenter's injury status will have repercussions on the Cardinals in 2012 and their ability to defend their World Series Championship.
