On Saturday afternoon, the University of Missouri Tigers basketball team and head coach Frank Haith escaped College Station, Texas with yet another impressive Big 12 conference road win after defeating Texas A&M 71-62 to push their record on the year to an outstanding 25-2.
Haith's Tigers also look to have escaped the injury bug as well.
Mizzou senior guard Matt Pressey rolled his ankle early in the second half, leaving the Tigers with just six players available in the second half. Luckily for Haith, it looks like Pressey will only miss that second half and should be available for Tuesday night's home game against Kansas State.
"He tweaked his ankle, but I think he'll be fine," Haith said.
The injury scare shows just how vulnerable this Tigers team is. And better yet, proves just how improbable and remarkable this season has been. Everything has gone right for Haith, including luck with injuries.
Pressey is a key role player on the team and not among one of the sharp-shooting stars in the Tigers rotation. But an even an injury to Pressey, who averages just 6.9 points and 3.3 rebounds per game, would devastate the Tigers and likely crush any National Championship aspirations this team may have built.
Mizzou has been unfortunate to escape injury much of the season. Their thin bench and only having seven scholarship players makes it vital that everyone stays healthy. Many feel that if Mizzou lost Ricardo Ratliffe or Steve Moore to injury, the only two Tigers over six foot, six inches, that they would be all but done.
I say that if Mizzou loses ANY of their seven players, the team would be drastically changed.
Each and every one of Mizzou's seven guys are equally important on this team. Its part of the reason they play with so much chemistry on both ends of the floor.
Mizzou is lucky the injury was not serious and now they can move forward and prepare for the stretch run.
