Already shorthanded on defense with injuries to Kris Russell and Kent Huskins, the St. Louis Blues will now be without defenseman Ian Cole for three games.
Cole is not injured though. He will be missing three games due to suspension.
The NHL's Department of Player Safety announced on Sunday that Cole would be suspended for three games for a hit to the head made at center ice of the Blues 3-0 loss to the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night.
Cole lowered his shoulder and caught Detroit forward Justin Abdelkater square in the jaw during Saturday night's game.
Brendan Shanahan, the NHL's police man on such plays, explains in the video below why Cole will be suspended for three games.
Cole has appeared in 13 games for the Blues this season, posting one goal and three assists while averaging 16:58 per game in ice time.
Cole will likely be replaced in the lineup by Cade Fairchild although an official move by the Blues has yet to be made.
Cole will not be eligible to return to the lineup until January 10th.
