Blues Overcome Bad Second Period, Comeback To Beat Oilers 4-3

After serving eleven minutes worth of penalties and allowing two power play goals in the second period against the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday night, the St. Louis Blues looked dead.   After two periods the Blues trailed 3-1 at home to the Oilers and were outshot 21-9 in the second period.

It looked as though it just was not the Blues night.

But the Blues came out with a charge at the beginning of the third period, scoring two power play goals of their own in the first two minutes of the period and pulled off an impressive 4-3 comeback victory on home ice.

After forward Chris Stewart got the Blues on the board with his ninth goal of the season in the third period, the Oilers rattled off three straight goals to build their big lead.  In the process, the Blues lost defenseman Roman Polak for the game when he was whistled for a five minute major for slashing and a game misconduct penalty.

But the Blues prevailed with a power play goal from defenseman Alex Pietrangelo to start the third period and then Pietrangelo assisted on another power play, this time a David Backes deflection, to tie the game at 3-3.

Blues forward Matt D'Agostini completed the comeback with a world class wrist shot with eleven minutes left in the third, beating the Oilers goalie with a rocket just under the cross bar to score the game winner.

Lost in the madness of all of the penalties and the dramatic comeback was the play of Blues goalie Jaroslav Halak.

Halak stopped 29 of the 32 shots he faced and kept the Blues in the game in the lopsided second period.

Pietrangelo finished the game with a goal and assist while his defensive partner Carlo Colaiacovo had three helpers on the night.

The win gives the Blues 51 points on the season and improves their home ice record to 16-3-2 at the Scottrade Center this season.  The Blues next play host to the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday night.
