The University of Missouri football program and head coach Gary Pinkel needed to win Monday night's match-up with North Carolina in the Independence Bowl. Pinkel and the Tigers needed to claim a victory in the back yard of their future conference. The Tigers needed to have momentum on their side as the ready themselves for their first season in the powerful SEC.
Not only did Mizzou beat North Carolina, they man-handled them, gaining 337 yards on the ground in route to a 41-24 victory to win the Independence Bowl in, ironically enough, their last game before gaining independence from the Big 12 Conference.
After falling behind 7-0 after an opening touchdown drive by the Tar Heels, Mizzou scored on their first five possessions and led 31-10 at halftime before cruising to what really was an easy and dominant victory.
North Carolina could not handle the Tigers on the ground as quarterback and Independence Bowl MVP James Franklin gained 142 yards and two touchdowns with his legs while running back Kendial Lawrence had 108 yards and a touchdown.
Franklin also tossed for 132 yards in the air in nasty conditions, including a eight yard touchdown strike to wide receiver Jerrell Jackson.
Franklin was not the only Tiger to have success in the air. Wide receiver T.J. Moe, who played quarterback during his high school career at Fort Zumwalt West in O'fallon, Missouri, tossed a 40 yard touchdown strike to wide receiver Wes Kemp to kickoff the scoring for Mizzou.
The Mizzou defense played well, allowing North Carolina 353 yards from scrimmage while forcing two North Carolina turnovers. Meanwhile, the Mizzou offense hummed for 513 of total yards of offense.
The win gives the Tigers eight on the season as they finish with an 8-5 record in their last season as a member of the Big 12 Conference.
Pinkel and the Tigers got the win they needed. Now they must get ready to play in the powerful SEC next season and have momentum on their side.
