Cardinals Sign Carlos Beltran To Two Year Contract

After the St. Louis Cardinals were unable to retain superstar first baseman Albert Pujols, many speculated about whether the organization would spend the excess cash on improving the team and attempt to fill the void left by Pujols departure for a lucrative 10 year, $254 million contract with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

On Thursday night, Cardinals fans got their answer.

The St. Louis Cardinals have signed outfielder Carlos Beltran to a two year contract.

Beltran, who will turn 35 early next season, will receive $26 million over two years.   The Cardinals also gave Beltran the security of a full no-trade clause over the extent of the deal.

Beltran spent last season with the New York Mets and San Francisco Giants, hitting .300 with 22 home runs and 84 RBI's while drawing 71 walks on the season.

Beltran will likely start the season playing right field as Allen Craig recovers from off-season knee surgery and is expected to miss the opening month of the season.

Once Craig returns, it is unclear how much Beltran will play in center field.  The former gold glove center fielder did not appear in a game in center field last season.
