The Rockies got Michael Cuddyer today, which fills their corner outfield gap and could be good news for the Cardinals.
Colorado had been one of five teams with some interest in all-star outfielder Carlos Beltran, but with Cuddyer now in the fold, they're out; leaving the Blue Jays, Cardinals and two mystery teams on the list of interested teams.
ESPN's Buster Olney said a couple days ago that St. Louis "is [a] serious entity in the Carlos Beltran talks."
I'd approve of his signing, since the team needs to recover at least some of the offensive ground lost in the failed Pujols negotiations and that they now have plenty of payroll space to work with for the same reason.
Remember also that the Jays, the only other identified team interested in Beltran, have likely won bidding rights for Japanese ace Yu Darvish--a move that cost them $50 million just to talk to him about a contract, which may set them back another $50 mil. With financial commitments like that, it makes me wonder if Toronto's alleged secret money pile would pony up for both Darvish and Beltran.
There are no definite numbers out there as to what Beltran and agent Dan Lozano (...) are asking for, but one could reason that it isn't cheap after the outfielder had his best season in three years in 2011.
There are other factors to consider as well. Beltran is 35 years old and didn't play a game in center field for either the Mets or Giants last season, which probably means his days there are over. And the Cards would have to decide, if they picked him up, if he's worth taking for over one year; or if they want to possibly over-pay him to get him to leave after a one-year contract like they did Lance Berkman last offseason, which could be something to consider, since a plethora of great starting pitching hits the market next year when Jake Westbrook and Kyle Lohse are gone and the team still has the Absent Pujols surplus.
