The St. Louis Blues dropped yet another heart-breaking shootout to the Nashville Predators on Friday night at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. The Blues lack of success on the power play and inability to beat Predators goalie Pekka Rinne in shootouts were painfully obvious.
Unfortunately, the Blues were without their leading goal scorer Alex Steen in the 2-1 shootout loss. Lou Korac of the Alton Telegraph reported prior to the game that Steen would miss Friday night's key match-up with the Predators with concussion like symptoms and the team is taking the necessary precautions to make sure he recovers properly.
It is believed that Steen suffered the concussion in Monday night's victory against the Dallas Stars and Steen did not immediately have any initial symptoms. Steen was in the lineup for the Blues the very next night in a 3-2 loss against the Detroit Red Wings, but reportedly did not feel well after Wednesday's practice.
It is not clear as to how long Steen, who has 13 goals, 11 assists, and a plus minus rating of plus 20, will be out. But it will be assumed that since Steen missed Friday night's loss that he will also likely miss Saturday's rematch with the Red Wings on Saturday night in Detroit.
Steen's concussion is one of many major head injuries that has become common place and a popular topic in the NHL. Top players across the league, including Nashville's Shane Weber very recently, continue to go down with major head injuries. Sydney Crosby is out of action with lingering concussion effects and long-time Blues defenseman and current member of the Philadelphia Flyers will miss the entire season with concussion symptoms.
While the concussion issue has been a league wide topic, it has especially hit the Blues hard. Andy McDonald, Carlo Colaiacovo, and David Perron have all missed games this season while recovering from concussion injuries.
The Blues can only hope for Steen to have a speedy recovery in order for their leading goal scorer to get back on the ice and help against tough goalies like Pekka Rinne in the future.
