The animosity between the University of Missouri and Kansas University was near an all-time high this past week as the two schools readied to face off in their annual football game at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri.
Kansas representatives were clamoring that the game could be the last between the two schools, blaming Missouri's departure from the Big 12 for the greener pastures of the SEC.
The actual game itself, seemed like an after-thought. The Tigers were considered heavy favorites as Kansas had only mustered two wins on the season under second year head coach Turner Gill.
But the Jayhawks defense did everything they could to put a scare into the Mizzou faithful who were hoping for a win in the last bout with their hated rival.
Kansas picked off Mizzou quarterback James Franklin three times in the first half and went to the locker room with a 10-3 lead and looked poised to pull off a massive upset.
But, Mizzou and head coach Gary Pinkel, who returned to the sideline after missing a game due to a suspension as a result of a DWI arrest, came out and dominated the second half to snatch their seventh win of the season with a 24-10 victory.
After the rocky first half, Franklin and the Tigers were able to regroup and outscore the Jayhawks 21-0 in the second half.
Franklin connected for two touchdown scores, including an impressive 53 yard bomb to sophomore wide receiver Marcus Lucas to seal the victory.
While the Mizzou offense was a story of two halves, the defense was dominant the entire game. Mizzou held the hapless Jayhawks to 137 total yards on the afternoon while fighting the terrible field position given to them by turnovers by Franklin and the offense.
Mizzou's regular season, just like their rivalry with Kansas, now ends and Pinkel and the Tigers must wait to find out where they will play their bowl game in December.
