When the St. Louis Blues announced that they had fired Davis Payne as head coach, many were surprised.  The Blues are just 6-7 on the young season, but with the season just 13 games young, many felt that Payne deserved more time to get the Blues on the right track.

Nobody is surprised though, that after the firing, that the Blues would turn to a quality head coach like Ken Hitchcock.

Blues general manager Doug Armstrong did not hold anything back about why he made the move, specifically citing Hitchcock's experienced leadership for the main reason to bring the former Stanley Cup winning head coach to the Blues.
"I felt that where we are at right now, we needed an experienced coach, someone that can guide this younger team to the area that it wants to go to."
"I just felt that I wanted a certainty of a head coach with a proven track record, a winner, to push these young players and push this organization to the next level. I think it was very important that we didn't wait around."
Hitchcock has been a head coach in the NHL for parts of 14 seasons and has recorded 534 wins, which is 14th all-time in NHL history.

Hitchcock will bring with him a tough minded attitude aimed at getting the Blues young, talented players on the same page and working together.  Hitchcock clearly believes in sacrifice and as you can see in the video below, is excited about the opportunity to bring this team together quickly.
