Chris Carpenter Skates With St. Louis Blues

The St. Louis Cardinals could not have won the 2011 World Series without Chris Carpenter.

Carpenter started three games in the Fall Classic, winning games one and seven in route to helping lead the Cardinals to their eleventh championship in franchise history.  Now that the season is officially over, Carpenter, a native of New Hampshire, can relax and enjoy himself a little bit.

On Thursday, Carpenter got a little help with relaxing from the St. Louis Blues.  Carpenter, who use to play hockey growing up and is a season ticket holder with the Blues, was allowed to skate and practice with the Blues on Thursday.

The former Cy Young Award Winner did more than just hold his own on the ice.  Blues defenseman Alex Pietrangelo joked that Carpenter may be good enough to help out with the Blues struggling power play.
"We were joking about it that maybe we could use him on the power play to help us out.  He seems like a pretty good player out there. He's probably better at hockey than we are at baseball. It's good to see him. I think we all know he's a pretty good athlete."
The six foot, six inch Carpenter would certainly look menacing on the ice with the added height of skates.  But the 36 year old right handed ace knows that despite how much he enjoys the sport of hockey, choosing baseball was clearly his best option.
"It was always a dream to do, but I think I chose the right route.  Hockey made you much tougher, I know that. Growing up playing hockey made me much tougher than baseball would have. It's a tougher sport, funner sport. I enjoy it a lot."
Knowing Carpenter's hockey background certainly helps to explain his bulldog attitude when on the mound.

Cardinals and Blues fans will get a chance to see Carpenter on the ice again on Friday night at the Scottrade Center when the Blues host the Vancouver Canucks.

Carpenter will not be in uniform, but instead, the Blues will honor Carpenter, Tony La Russa, and the St. Louis Cardinals for winning the World Series.

Cardinals fans can only hope Carpenter does not get the itch to put on skates again until his playing days are over.
