When Tony La Russa retired as the manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, fans immediately began to ask and wonder what now? Who is going to manage this team next year to defend their World Series Championship?
Many have speculated about a number of different candidates, namely Joe Maddon, Terry Francona, and third base coach Jose Oquendo. Many have voted and voiced their opinion about who they want to be the new manager.
According to csnphilly.com the Cardinals have started going to work on finding that next manager. The St. Louis Cardinals have asked the Philadelphia Phillies for permission to speak with their Triple AAA manager.
It just so happens that the Triple AAA manager is former Chicago Cubs second baseman and Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg.
Sandberg has been the manager in for the Phillies Triple AAA affiliate for the past season and has spent several seasons moving up the ranks in the Chicago farm system.
Sandberg seemed primed for a move to the big leagues last season, but the Cubs passed over Sandberg for Mike Quade, who coincidentally was ousted as manager of the Cubs today. Furthermore, new Cubs general manager Theo Epstein has reportedly already told Sandberg that he would not be a candidate for the Cubs job.
Nevertheless, if the reports are true, it truly proves that the Cardinals are not simply looking for a big name or at somebody from within.
High rising, youthful managers are on the list too and being considered.
The Cardinals should consider Sandberg. How many times do you hear about a Hall of Fame player putting in the time riding around on minor league buses, working his way back to the big leagues?
Sandberg's work ethic alone should make Cardinals fans love him and if he can prove he can work with young players and manage the egos of veterans, then the Cardinals should absolutely consider him a serious candidate for the job.
