When the St. Louis Rams acquired wide receiver Brandon Lloyd from the 'Denver Broncos, Rams fans were excited about his ability to open up the offense and give quarterback Sam Bradford a down field threat.
Many thought that Lloyd would be excited to be reunited with former head coach and current Rams offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. Lloyd is a free agent at the end of the season and many felt a reunion with McDaniels will help the wideout cash in.
But Lloyd is excited about playing football in St. Louis for different reasons. Lloyd simply wants to win and help lead this team into the playoffs.
"This isn't a a celebration for me and my athletic ability. I'm at the stage where I'm trying to get into a playoff game and see how I perform on that stage. I am just a piece to help everyone achieve what we are trying to achieve. We are trying to get this season on the right track. Catching all those passes last year and getting all those yards was fun as hell, don't get me wrong. But I'm more concerned with getting into the playoffs as soon as possible at this stage of my career."Lloyd has played like a player thirsty for the playoffs in his first two games with the Rams.
Lloyd has caught 12 passes for 127 yards and a touchdown. These are not earth shattering statistics, especially for the explosive Lloyd. But his presence has provided the offense with a calming effect and opened up options for others.
Just look at Rams running back Steven Jackson, who exploded for 159 yards rushing and two touchdowns in the Rams first victory of the season against the Saints. It is hard to measure Lloyd's impact on the improvement in the running game, but it is easy to see when you watch the game.
Lloyd has been able to play so well without getting to work with Bradford, who has been nursing a high ankle sprain since Lloyd arrived.
Now that it looks like Bradford may return to practice and has a chance to play this week, Rams fans should get really excited about what Lloyd and Bradford may be able to do together.
If anything else, they should be excited about the attitude of their new wide receiver, who simply just wants to win.
