Fresh off watching their St. Louis Cardinals win the World Series on Friday night, St. Louis Rams fans had extremely low expectations as their win-less Rams hosted the powerful New Orleans Saints on Sunday afternoon. After watching the Cardinals win, the Rams game and season for that matter still felt like an after-thought.
But maybe the Rams picked up on some of the winning spirit of their baseball playing friends down the street. Or possibly there is just a lot of winning magic in the air because the Rams picked up their first victory of the season and destroyed the New Orleans Saints 31-21.
Playing without their star quarterback Sam Bradford for the second consecutive week, the Rams offense turned to former Pro Bowl running back Steven Jackson, who erupted for 159 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
New wide receiver Brandon Lloyd also got into the mix, catching six passes from backup quarterback A.J. Feeley for 53 yards, including an eight yard touchdown reception.
While the offense finally produced some positive results, the reason the Rams were victorious because of the play of the defense.
One week after defensive end Chris Long called the Rams defense "embarrassing," the Rams held the Saints juggernaut offense to just 21 points and sacked Drew Brees six time while picking off two of the All Pro's passes.
Long led the effort on defense too, picking up three sacks on the afternoon and rookie Robert Quinn got into the mix with a sack and a blocked punt as well.
Clearly the magic that was floating around Busch Stadium the past six weeks found its way to the Edward Jones Dome as the Rams finally looked like the team many expected them to be coming into the season.
