Deaton on SEC: "Our Head Has To Outweigh Our Heart"

After Monday's Big 12 board of director's meeting on Monday little further was known regarding the status of the University of Missouri as a member of the Big 12.

The conference apparently urged Mizzou to stay in the conference while Mizzou chancellor Brady Deaton did not inform his current colleagues whether his school intended to leave for the SEC or stay in the mix in the Big 12.

On Monday evening, when asked by KOMU-TV in Columbia, Missouri after the meetings and how they went, Deaton may have given the first specific clue of what lies ahead for the school and its athletic program's conference affiliation.
"I wish them the best, and all of that."
Understanding that alums and fans of the athletic programs at the University were beginning to grow impatient and wanted an answer regarding the school's future, Deaton assured reporters that the school was working hard, but that the process can not be rushed.
"There's some very specific things that have to be addressed. We want to address those. We really can't rush these things. These are things you can't rush."
Deaton also acknowledged that this process is not exactly about money but instead on providing the best competitive situation for the student athletes at Mizzou.  But Deaton knows that this is an emotional issue for all connected to Mizzou.
"The world of course is changing very, very drastically, as the University of Missouri has changed, and coming to terms with those changes is very much a part of what we're all about.  And as often is the case, our head has to outweigh our heart in achieving some of the objectives, because the heart won't necessarily in this case lead to where the University is going and needs to be going."
An announcement that the school could leave for the SEC could occur at any moment.  But Deaton wants Mizzou fans and alum to know that he and the others in charge in Columbia are doing things the right way and will cover every possible scenario before making Mizzou's move to the SEC official.
