There was a bean war between the two clubs as Ryan Braun and Albert Pujols were on the receiving end of purpose pitches from the opposition. There was the yelling match that ensued in the team's last meeting between Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter and Brewers outfielder Nyjer Morgan, which was followed by a Morgan tweet that referred to the Cardinals first baseman as "Alberta."
Now, just one day before the two teams are set to square off in Game 1 of the National League Championship Series, the two teams have already began the trash talking. Both sides are openly expressing their dislike for the other. Both sides are admitting that there is a high level of bad blood.
When asked if the Cardinals and Brewers were two teams that simply did not get along, Cardinals outfielder Lance Berkman was very candid and direct.
"That would be correct."Brewers Game 1 starter Zack Greinke also was not bashful, especially when it came to the subject of Chris Carpenter.
"I don't know. They think his presence, his attitude out there sometimes is like a phony attitude. But ... and then he yells at people. He just stares people down and stuff. And most pitchers just don't do that.
"And when guys do, I guess some hitters get mad. Some hitters do it to pitchers. But when you do that some people will get made. There's other pitchers in the league that do it, but I don't know, a lot of guys on our team don't like Carpenter."It did not end there. Cardinals manager Tony La Russa responded to Greinke's comments with his own pointed words.
"That's a bad comment to make unless you know Chris Carpenter. Our attitude is we look at ourselves and we grade ourselves. Even if we don't like what's happening on the other side, it's not our business unless somebody crosses the line."
"So I think the Brewers should take care of their players and their comments and not be concerned about other players' comments. If they had Chris Carpenter, they would be cheering for him and believing in him and they would not be allowing somebody who was a teammate to make a crack like that."
"But Greinke's not his teammate, so I'm disappointed. If you knew him, none of that stuff is true. He doesn't give (expletive) .... and he doesn't take it. That's the way it's supposed to be."Before a single pitch has been thrown in this highly anticipated series the fireworks have already begun.
But, when it comes to the Cardinals and Brewers, are we really surprised?
It is sure to be a fun series.
Eh, let him talk. The Cards will silence them in the end!
ReplyDeleteWhat this article, and all of the other ones harping on the media-hyped "trash talk" is what Greinke said along with this. He spoke openly about how his club feels about Carpenter, but he was also very candid about the fact that he has immense respect for the Cardinals, for their manager, and for how they play the game. I'm not talking about fake respect like all of the other players (from both clubs) have, I'm talking about real respect. If Greinke doesn't like something, he will tell the media that, but he was open about how he has no ill feelings towards the Cardinals. Poor guy can't stand the media, and gets misquoted if he says something even remotely interesting.
