Hopes were high for the St. Louis Rams offense coming into the 2011 season.
Budding star quarterback Sam Bradford is in his second year in the NFL and new offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels had promised to bring some of the flair seen in past, explosive offenses he guided.
But so far things have not worked out as the Rams have began the season 0-3 on the season and the offense has mustered just 36 points, which fourth worst in the entire NFL.
Much of the Rams problems have been with the offensive line as the Rams have failed to protect Bradford. Head coach Steve Spagnuolo says that protecting Bradford is a priority and something the team has continued to work on this week.
“That’s a prideful group. Nobody is in here working harder than that group of O-linemen and Coach Loney. And along with Sam and the backs, the tight ends, pass protection is everybody. I tell the receivers in there too, it’s everybody. Everybody that understands football knows that in those situations it’s not always just the o-line. It’s not always just one guy. It’s usually a number of things, so we’re trying to get them all ironed out and play better football in that regard.”Spagnuolo better hope things get ironed out. The Rams have allowed Bradford to be sacked 12 times through just three games and that does not count the numerous other hits that Bradford has taken.
If you peak at the NFL leaderboard for sacks on the season, the top is cluttered with defensive lineman the Rams have already faced this young season, including Jason Pierre-Paul who is tied for second in the league with 4.5 sacks and Terrell Suggs, Cullen Jenkins, and Jason Babin are tied for fourth with four sacks a piece.
So until the Rams figure out how to protect Bradford and keep him upright, the offensive struggles and losing will continue.
