The loss of corner back Ron Bartell for the season certainly has put the St. Louis Rams and their defense in a bind.  The Rams are second to last in the NFL in total yards allowed, letting opponents rack up 426.3 yards per game during the team's 0-3 loss to the season.

To compensate for the loss of Bartell and to try and stop the bleeding, the Rams have picked up an extra corner back in Rod Hood and Rams fans have been quick to point the ineptitude of Justin King, Bartell's replacement at corner back.  But King has not been the only player who has struggled because of the absence of Bartell.

Rams corner back Bradley Fletcher has had his struggles as well.

Fletcher, who has been promoted to the lead corner on the Rams roster, leads all NFC West players with six penalties for 52 yards on the season.

Fletcher has been decent in coverage but has committed costly mistakes and penalties that hurt the Rams.

Some of Fletcher's flagrant play has drawn the ire of NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.  Fletcher was fined a total of $15,000 for two plays during the Rams blowout loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

Fletcher was fined $7,500 a piece for a horse-collar tackle and a late-hit out of bounds.

Fletcher's wreckless play was likely out of frustration as he watched the Raven torch his team on their own home field.  But a lot of Fletcher's frustration could be considered self-inflicted as he and his teammates allow opponents to walk over them with out much of a fight through the first three games of the young season.

If the Rams hope to get on track the defense will need to be better and players like Fletcher will need to cut down on the needless penalties.
