Nyjer Morgan Goes Bonkers After Chris Carpenter Strikes Him Out

St. Louis Cardinals ace starter Chris Carpenter has built himself a reputation of being a bit of a hot head over the past couple of seasons.

Carpenter was involved in the Johnny Cueto incident in 2010, yelled at current teammate Edwin Jackson when he was a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks, and even yelled at Brendan Ryan, his shortstop at the time during the heat of battle.

On Wednesday night, in the ninth inning of the Cardinals 2-0 shutout of the Milwaukee Brewers, Carpenter did not appear to do anything but blow a fastball right by Brewers outfielder Nyjer Morgan.

And then Morgan lost it and went bonkers.

After Carpenter's fifth strikeout of the night, Morgan, visibly on camera, started shouting obscenities and curse words at the Cardinals hurler.

Morgan than took either bubble gum or chewing tobacco and tossed it in the general direction of Carpenter.  Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols and teammates saw this and quickly the benches cleared.  Morgan eventually left the field after he was ejected and order was quickly restored with the help of Brewers first baseman Prince Fielder.

Morgan said that Carpenter was the first to say something, but that was not caught on camera and Carpenter denied saying anything to the outfielder.

The altercation may have stemmed from a earlier incident this season.  In a 5-2 Cardinals win in Milwaukee on August 11th, Morgan was told by the umpiring crew to stop yelling at Carpenter from the dugout.  Morgan started the chirping from the dugout after he and Carpenter exchanged words on the field after Morgan grounded into a double play.

Morgan, who is hitting .313 and having a great season on the field, has had his share of outbursts in the past and had shown signs of maturing this season with the Brewers.

It is possibly that Morgan was holding a month long grudge against Carpenter after the incident in August.  But after Wednesday night's incident and some of Morgan's unique tweets, it is unclear if anyone will ever really know what is going through Morgan's head.

  1. Try getting more facts before posting such a biased post. Nyjer said he charged b/c Carpenter cursed at him. Not even a Nyjer nor a Milwaukee fan, but I can obviously tell you're a true exaggerating homer donk.
