The Missouri Tigers and head coach Gary Pinkel knew they were in for a test when they traveled to Tempe, Arizona to face the Arizona State Sun Devils. Stepping into a hostile environment, Mizzou was facing a team hungry for a big time victory in front of a packed house at Sun Devil Stadium.
For awhile, things looked ugly for Mizzou as they fell behind 30-16 before sophomore quarterback James Franklin rallied the troops and almost pulled off a big time, non-conference road victory.
Franklin threw a pair of touchdown passes in the fourth quarter, a 25 yard connection with wide receiver L'Damian Washington and a three yard strike to tight end to tight end Michael Egnew.
Mizzou even had a shot to win the game after a huge 39 yard run by sophomore running back Henry Josey with under two minutes remaining put the Tigers in position for a game tying field goal.
Senior placekicker Grant Ressel was in position for a 48 yard field goal to win the game for Mizzou. But Pinkel decided to call a pair of timeouts, effectively icing his own kicker as Ressel missed the field goal and the Tigers lost in overtime 37-30.
It was a game filled with disappointment for the Tigers, who were down to one healthy running back after De'Vion Moore left the game early in the first quarter. Mizzou committed 11 penalties for 114 yards and three out of 15 times on third down.
Franklin was good though. Really good and showed that he is ready to handle the big stage.
Without much of a running game to lean on Franklin completed 26 of 42 passes for 319 yards without an interception. Franklin was busy on the ground as well, rushing 27 times for 84 yards and another score.
But the story of the night will ultimately come down to Pinkel's decision to call two time outs prior to Ressel's 48 yard attempt to win the game.
Mizzou falls to 1-1 on the season and will next face Western Illinois next Saturday in Columbia.
