Led by Kyle Lohse's six scoreless innings on the hill, the Cardinals defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 4-2.
Lohse was sharp, allowing six hits, walked three, and struck out six Brewers hitters while throwing 91 pitches. It was the first start that Lohse had made in nine days and the extra rest paid dividends.
Meanwhile, without any shadows to contend with, the Cardinals offense woke up enough to score four runs.
Lance Berkman gave the Cardinals the lead in the first inning that scored outfielder Jon Jay.
Jay added his tenth home run of the season in the third inning and Matt Holliday added another solo home run in the fourth inning before Jay knocked in the club's fourth and final run with a single in the seventh inning.
Cardinals shortstop Rafael Furcal added two hits, one slap hit to left and another perfectly executed hit and run.
Reliever Jason Motte allowed three hits and one run in the ninth inning before finally closing the door, picking up his third save of the season.
The Cardinals are not 9.5 games back in the National League Central Division and will play their last game against the first place Brewers on Wednesday.
