When rosters were expanded earlier in September, St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa admitted that Cardinals shortstop prospect Tyler Greene has never really had a fair shake at everyday playing time at the major league level.

With the Cardinals miraculous run to position themselves for a possible wild-card birth, Greene still has not seen much playing time as the Cardinals have primarily used Rafael Furcal at shortstop.

But, La Russa has found a meaningful and specific role for Greene down the stretch run.

Greene stole a key base in the Cardinals 2-1 comeback, crucial victory against the Chicago Cubs on Saturday afternoon.

"He's got that ability,"  La Russa said. "Great jump, great acceleration. Big steal."

Greene put together big number this season down in Memphis, hitting .323 with 14 home runs and 19 stole bases for the Redbirds.

But Greene knows that he will not get a chance to translate that success in the majors this season and instead has accepted his role on this year's roster as the club tries to catch the Atlanta Braves.

"It's time to stay ready, stay fresh at all times," Greene said. "That's what I've been trying to do. I almost pretend that I'm playing every day just to keep that mentality and be ready to go."

Speed helps to win games and Greene has plenty of it and should continue to see plenty of opportunities to use his legs and help the Cardinals try and win the National League Wild Card.
