St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Lance Berkman has practically been pleading with the Cardinals, through the media, to give him a contract extension.  Berkman has mentioned his wishes to return to the Cardinals next season twice over the past two weeks.

Rather than receive a contract extension from the Cardinals, Berkman may get something else from the Cardinals.  Berkman may receive a trade to the Texas Rangers.

According to the Dallas Morning News, the Texas Rangers are targeting Berkman as one of their top choices to replace Nelson Cruz in their lineup, who will be out three weeks.

When asked by a Dallas radio station about the Berkman rumors, Rangers owner Nolan Ryan did not deny interest, but remained diplomatic.
"Obviously with Nellie going out like he is, not knowing when he's going to be back and we got a tough schedule ahead of us, anything we can do to help the ballclub, we're certainly going to look at it.  Lance is having an outstanding year with the Cardinals. So is that a possibility? I guess you could say it's remote, but ... with a player of Lance's caliber, if that's a possibility, you certainly have to give it consideration."
Rangers starting pitcher C.J. Wilson was not diplomatic.  He made it very clear that he wanted Berkman to join the Rangers for the stretch run.
"You have to think about the needs of the team and the needs of the other teams that would potentially (be) going after him as well.  It'd be great for us to get him because the Angels could use him a lot. ... Lance Berkman is a good player. He can play first base. He can play the outfield."
In his first season with the Cardinals, Berkman is having a fantastic offensive season while showing that he can still play the outfield after four seasons primarily playing first base.

Berkman is hitting .289 on the season with 30 home runs and 81 RBI's while getting on base at .405 clip.

Berkman, who is a free agent at the end of the season, has reportedly cleared waivers, but would need to be on the Rangers roster by September 1st in order to be eligible for the post season.
