Something to push them over the edge and propel them to a multi-game winning streak to help catch the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central Division.
On Tuesday night against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Cardinals outfielder Jon Jay led off the top of the ninth inning with a double off the Pirates lights out closer Joel Hanrahan. Jay scored later in the inning on a Matt Holliday sacrifice fly and it looked as though the Cardinals were on their way to an inspirational victory.
Then, almost predictably, closer Fernando Salas blew his fourth save of the season in the bottom of the ninth, giving up a Neil Walker solo home run to tie the game.
The Cardinals eventually lost to the Pirates 5-4 in the 11th inning when newly acquired Arthur Rhodes allowed a walk-off home run to Pirates outfielder Garret Jones to end the game.
Meanwhile, the Brewers found a way to win once again on Tuesday night, pushing their lead in the NL Central to seven games and making the loss even more devastating.
Chris Carpenter pitched well for the Cardinals, tossing seven innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits while striking out ten Pirates hitters.
The Cardinals mustered ten hits on the evening, including three hits from David Freese. But the club stranded 11 runners on base, squandering multiple opportunities to take the lead for good.
Albert Pujols hit a solo home run in the sixth inning. It was the slugger's 30th home run of the season and marks the 11th season in a row that Pujols has hit at least 30 home runs.
The Cardinals wrap up their series with the Pirates on Wednesday and turn to Jamie Garcia to pick up a much needed victory.
