The thought of having an elite pass rusher to strike fear into the heads of opposing quarterbacks coupled with head coach Steve Spagnuolo's blitzing schemes gives experts chills regarding how good this year's Rams defense could be.
And despite Quinn having a decent showing in his Rams debut, making one tackle for a loss on an Indianapolis Colts running play, Spagnuolo made zero qualms about publicly addressing the fact that Quinn has a lot of work to do.
Here is what Spagnuolo told Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch about Quinn's play in the Rams 33-10 victory in their preseason opener on Saturday night.
"For a guy that hasn't had a lot of reps, did not have the luxury of the OTAs, we think he's going along fairly decent. He's got some natural talent. He doesn't do everything right, makes mistakes here and there like every rookie does. But when it's time to plant and cut, plant and go, you can see he's got that."
"I think he's still thinking out there more than playing. But that's to be expected when you're a rookie and everything's new."Spagnuolo obviously feels that Quinn has a lot of work ahead of him in order to contribute on an every-down basis. The coach likely is making these public comments in order to show the rookie first rounder that he must work to get his time on the field.
And it does not come as a surprise that Quinn has lots of work to do. He sat out his last season at North Carolina due to NCAA violations and has not seen live football action in over a year.
But if the Rams plan on having playoff aspirations, Quinn must quickly develop into a pass rusher that can get after the quarterback on passing downs.
Hopefully Spagnuolo's "fairly decent" evaluation of Quinn pushes the rookie to get better as practice continues in the preseason.
