Whether it was because they were so far out of the playoff race by that point or did not feel any of their young players were ready for the responsibility, the Blues felt more comfortable giving multiple players "A's" on their jersey.
Heading into this season, Blues general manager Doug Armstrong still is not sure whether head coach Davis Payne will name an individual captain or give a group of players "A's" once again. Here is what Armstrong had to say on the captain situation.
"We're discussing that now. We want to get the input of some of the other people in our organization - the coaches, some people in our management staff - and we'll have that decision by the first day of training camp ... whether we go with a group of players that will make up a leadership group or we name a captain."
"We're further ahead that we were at the end of the season, but we're not at the point where we've solidified what we want to do, and that's something that we'll spend the next three weeks discussing."If the Blues do name a captain, forward David Backes would seem like the obvious choice. The team's leading goal scorer from last season was often mentioned last season as the team's "unofficial" leader.
Other returning Blues often would seem to receiver consideration. Forward Alex Steen, defenseman Barret Jackman, and forward Andy McDonald are experienced veterans. Standout defenseman Alex Pietrangelo should also will likely be considered since he should be one of the faces of the franchise for years to come.
Finally, newcomers Jason Arnott and Jamie Langenbrunner could be considered. Both have served as captains for past teams and were brought to St. Louis partyly because of their leadership experience.
So who should be the new Blues captain this season? Vote now!
