After watching rookie Lance Kendricks dominate in the Rams first preseason game, Rams fans had to be pretty excited about the combination the organization had built at tight end.
Kendricks and second year tight end Mike Hoomanawanui figure to give opposing defenses match-up issues all season. That is, of course if "Illini Mike" can stay healthy.
Plagued with injuries throughout his rookie season, Hoomanawanui managed to piece together a solid rookie season. "Illini Mike" had just 13 receptions for 146 yards, but three of those catches were for touchdowns.
Hoomanawanui and Kendricks would give the Rams two solid tight ends that can punch the ball into the end zone in the Rams' quick-hitting passing game.
But it looks as though Hoomanawanui is injured once again.
Hoomanawanui suffered what head coach Steve Spagnuolo referred to as a calf strain.
"It may be significant, not sure," Spagnuolo told reporters. "We're a little concerned there."
The concern is valid as Hoomanawanui figures to be a popular target in the Red Zone for second year quarterback Sam Bradford. Still without a legitimate and reliable down field threat, Hoomanwanui's presence in the offense if vital to the success of the Rams as they face a grueling schedule to open the season.
Fans can only hope "Illini Mike" heals quicker this season.

I fear Hooman is one of those unfortunate souls who are injury prone their whole career and never reached their potential. Too bad, so sad.
