Cardinals Suspend Shelby Miller "Indefinitely"

Shelby Miller has been doing a lot of good things on the field down in Springfield, Missouri playing for the Cardinals Double AA affiliate.

Evidently, the prized prospect has been doing some bad things off the field.

According to multiple reports, the Cardinals organization has suspended their number one rated prospect indefinitely for a "violation of team policy"

"I'm not going to get into specifics," said Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak. "Let's just leave it at that."

According to Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Miller has been involved in two alcohol related incidents since joining the Springfield Cardinals.

Obviously, the big problem here is that Miller is just 20 years old.  So while he is a rising star on the verge of breaking the cusp of Major League baseball within the next calendar year, he still has another year to go before he is legally able to consume alcoholic beverages.

While the Cardinals have suspended Miller indefinitely, it is not believed that the prospect will be shut down for too long.

"I will say that the suspension was no less or more harsh due to his status as a prospect -- it simply falls in line with the policy we apply to all of our players," Cardinals farm director John Vuch wrote in an email to the Springfield News-Leader.  "It's unlikely to be terribly lengthy."

Miller has been terrific after being promoted to Springfield earlier this season.  The flame-thrower is 7-3 with a 2.97 ERA.  Miller has struck out 71 hitters in 69.2 innings pitched in Double AA this season.

Unfortunately, Miller will not be striking out any hitters due to some premature consumption of adult beverages.  Hopefully, as the Cardinals will likely turn to Miller at some point in 2012, Miller learns from this mistake and becomes a more mature professional along the way.
