For the second consecutive season, Holliday barely missed qualifying for the second round.
Holliday blasted five first round home runs, totaling 2,090 feet.
His five home runs tied him with David Ortiz and Prince Fielder for the third highest amount in the round. Since only the top four advanced to the second round, the trio had a "swing-off." All three got five total swings to hit as many home runs as they could. The person with the lowest total in their five swings would be cut.
Holliday hit two home runs to start the "swing-off," but Ortiz followed with four bombs while Fielder homered on all five of his sudden death swings, which eliminated the Cardinals outfielder.
Holliday's five first round home runs averaged 418 feet with his longest being a 443 foot shot coming on his third home run.
Holliday, who is hitting .324 on the season with 14 home runs and 49 RBI's, had teammate Yadier Molina pitch to him during the event.
New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano eventually won the 2011 Home Run Derby. Cano hit 32 total home runs on the night, including 12 in the final round to beat Boston Red Sox first baseman Adrian Gonzalez.
