This season, his first in a Cardinals uniform, Berkman was once again selected by the fans to start in the Midsummer Classic. This time, at the age of 35, Berkman will start as an outfielder.
Berkman will join outfielders Matt Kemp of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Ryan Braun of the Milwaukee in the National League starting outfield.
Berkman is hitting .296 on the season with 21 home runs and 59 RBI's. He is getting on base over 40 percent of the time while posting a slugging percentage of .599.
Berkman has been a vital part of the Cardinals run to the front of the National League Central Division. Berkman has been a consistent performer in the middle of the lineup that has seen sluggers Albert Pujols and Matt Holliday spend a meaningful amount of time on the disabled list.
Plus Berkman has returned to the outfield this season for the first time since 2007 when he spent 32 games in the outfield for the Astros, making his numbers and his MVP type season even more incredible.
Speaking of MVP, Berkman has solidly positioned himself as a main candidate in this year's race.
An All-Star selection may not be the honor Berkman receives this season, especially if he keeps this pace up with his bat.
