Blues Add Veteran Jamie Langenbrunner To Mix

The St. Louis Blues have signed veteran winger Jamie Langenbrunner to a one year contract that will pay him $2.5 million next season.  Langenbrunner will also be eligible to earn an additional $300,000.

Langenbrunner joins Jason Arnott for the 2011-2012 season, giving the Blues added scoring depth at forward and veteran leadership on the front line, something last year's team was desperately missing.  Arnott also received an identical contract from the Blues.

“We’re excited to add a veteran forward with two Stanley Cup rings to our roster,” general manager Doug Armstrong said of the signing. “Jamie is a solid player who will bring years of NHL experience on and off the ice for our hockey club.”

Langenbrunner split time last season with the New Jersey Devils and Dallas Stars.  The 35 year old right winger appeared in 70 games last season, scoring nine goals and posting 32 total points on the season.

Langenbrunner certainly brings the type of veteran leadership Armstrong was looking for during this free agency period.  Langenbrunner served as captain of the New Jersey Devils the past four seasons and was the captain of Team USA in 2010, who won the silver medal in the Olympics held in Vancouver.

Blues forward and leading scorer from last season David Backes played with Langenbrunner on that Team USA team.  Backes knows that Langenbrunner will be a great fit for the Blues next season.

"He's got a calm presence, but with that calm presence comes that work ethic that's unmatched," Backes said. "He's a guy that has achieved a lot of his success from outworking his opponents. That's kind of the blue-collar mentality that the Blues have had and have to continue to have to be successful. He'll bring a lot to the table. He had a lot of words of wisdom at the Olympics and those words of wisdom are still holding true every time we step on the ice."

Hopefully some of Langenbrunner's words of wisdom and play on the ice can help lead the Blues back to the playoffs next season.
