Berkman's home run was the only run that crossed the plate for the St. Louis Cardinals as the Tampa Bay Rays beat up on starter Kyle McClellan in route to a 5-1 victory at Tropicana Field.
Berkman is a throwback type of player, so it is fitting that he homered on a night that saw the Cardinals and Rays wear throwback jerseys.
Unfortunately, despite collecting 10 hits on the evening, the Cardinals could muster just the one run. The Cardinals squandered two opportunities by grounding into two double plays and the club was just one for nine with runners in scoring position on the night.
Meanwhile on the mound stater Kyle McClellan was rock solid through five innings, holding the Rays scoreless. But in the sixth inning the Rays offense struck, scoring five runs off McClellan, including a two run home run by Rays outfielder Justin Ruggiano.
McClellan picked up the loss, moving his record to 6-5 on the season.
The loss drops the Cardinals record to 45-39 on the season and into a tie for first place with the Milwaukee Brewers.
